Industries Served

From FinTech to HealthTech and SaaS

Built for Places Where You Cannot Just Push a Fix

Plenty of software teams treat a bad release as an inconvenience. In Sheffield's core industries a change often has to be justified, documented and re-approved before it counts, whether that is a production process or a clinical model. Four habits follow from taking that seriously.

Every Change Has a Reason Attached

Commits, releases and configuration changes carry the reasoning, not just the diff. When somebody asks in eighteen months why a calculation behaves as it does, the answer exists in writing rather than in somebody's memory.

Releases That Can Be Undone Cleanly

Rollback is designed alongside the deployment, not improvised during the incident. Where a bad state has consequences beyond a support ticket, returning to a known-good version quickly matters more than shipping fast.

Test Evidence You Can Hand to Someone Else

Testing produces artefacts, not reassurance. Coverage reports, load results and security reviews are written to be read by an auditor or a customer's quality team.

Versions That Stay Reproducible Later

Dependencies are pinned, environments are defined in code, and a build from last year can be recreated. Unremarkable in regulated manufacturing, and surprisingly rare in commercial software.

What clients love about working with us

Change Control Taken Seriously

Sheffield clients supplying into nuclear, defence and aerospace need an evidence trail, not just working software. That gets built in rather than assembled when an audit is announced.

Handover That Actually Transfers

Documentation is written for the engineer who inherits the system, including the logic that previously existed only in somebody's head.

Overnight Progress, Not Overnight Silence

Our day starts around six and a half hours ahead of Sheffield, so questions raised late in your afternoon usually have written answers waiting the next morning.

Direct Line to the Engineer

No account manager relaying technical questions between you and whoever wrote the code. Decisions get settled in one exchange rather than three.

A City That Has Always Had to Prove Things Work

Sheffield's manufacturing is not the volume kind. It is the sort where components end up in reactors, submarines, jet engines and oil and gas equipment, and where the customer wants to know exactly how a part was made. Forgemasters has been forging steel here since the eighteenth century and is a good way into rebuilding its site. Around it sits a supply chain whose competitive advantage is qualification: approvals, certifications and process records that took years to earn. Software written for these companies inherits that logic.

The research base works the same way. The University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre exists specifically to de-risk manufacturing technology before it reaches production, working with over a hundred industrial partners including Boeing, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and Airbus, alongside the Nuclear AMRC and the wider Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District spanning Sheffield and Rotherham. That mindset extends into healthcare too: the Insigneo Institute, run jointly by the university and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, is Europe's largest research institute dedicated to in silico medicine.

There is a newer Sheffield alongside that. The city has a real games and digital sector, sports engineering work through Sheffield Hallam, and a growing set of software companies with no connection to steel at all. What they share with the older industries is a working culture direct about problems and unimpressed by presentation. Sheffield clients ask harder technical questions earlier than most, and are quick to say when an answer has not landed.

Manufacturing Where Provenance Is the Product

Sheffield firms supply nuclear, defence, aerospace and energy customers who require documented evidence of how something was made.

A Research Centre Built Around De-Risking

The AMRC and Nuclear AMRC exist to prove new manufacturing technology is safe to adopt, working with more than a hundred industrial partners.

Europe's Largest In Silico Medicine Institute

Insigneo, a University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals partnership, builds and validates computer models of human physiology.

A Digital Sector With Its Own Character

Games, sports engineering and software companies across the city, sharing a directness about technical problems that makes projects easier.

Custom Software Development in Sheffield

Most organisations here call because a process has outgrown the tools holding it together, or because three systems disagree about the same number. We scope the specific constraint rather than assuming a rebuild, and where configuring an existing product would be cheaper and faster, we will tell you.

  • Discovery run with the people using the system daily, not only the sponsor
  • Architecture designed so a later change costs a sprint rather than a rebuild
  • Role-based access and audit logging suited to regulated environments
  • Automated test coverage on the workflows that would hurt if they failed
  • Handover documentation aimed at an engineer who has never met us

IOT Development for Sheffield Manufacturing and Production

Sheffield manufacturers tend to have decades of process knowledge held in people, paper and spreadsheets, and machinery predating any current software strategy. The work is getting reliable data out of equipment never designed to provide it, without disturbing a process that is already approved.

  • Data capture from existing machinery, including equipment with no modern interface
  • Production and quality systems that preserve the evidence trail customers audit
  • Traceability from raw material through to finished component
  • Predictive maintenance built on real sensor history rather than uptime models
  • Monitoring and alerting built around what actually breaks in your operation

Digital Transformation and Legacy Modernisation in Sheffield

A lot of Sheffield engineering firms run software written by someone who left years ago, on a platform nobody wants to touch. The first job is an accurate picture of what it actually does, because here the undocumented behaviour is frequently what a customer depends on.

  • Audit establishing what the existing system genuinely does before anything changes
  • Phased migration keeping the old system running until the new one is proven
  • Behaviour-matching tests so the replacement produces identical results where required
  • Data migration with reconciliation you can show to a customer or auditor
  • Documentation of the logic that previously existed only in the code

Big Data and Analytics for Sheffield Engineering Teams

Between the AMRC's engineering work and Insigneo's clinical modelling, Sheffield generates briefs where the computation is the product. These workloads are judged on reproducibility and validation rather than interface polish.

  • Inspection and test data platforms consolidating measurement across machines and sites
  • Reproducible pipelines so a result can be regenerated identically years later
  • Validation frameworks comparing output against experimental or clinical data
  • Compute scheduling and cost management for heavy numerical work
  • Interfaces letting specialists run and inspect models without writing code

Cloud and DevOps Solutions for Sheffield Teams

Manufacturing environments have constraints ordinary cloud advice ignores: equipment that cannot be exposed to the internet, sites with unreliable connectivity, and change windows dictated by production schedules. Modernisation here works around the factory, not the other way round.

  • Infrastructure audit documenting what genuinely runs before any migration
  • Infrastructure-as-code so environments stop depending on individual memory
  • Deployment approaches that respect production change windows
  • Monitoring and alerting built around what actually fails in your operation
  • Backup and recovery rehearsed rather than merely documented

IT Staff Augmentation for Sheffield Engineering Teams

Senior engineering hires here compete against the AMRC's industrial partners and can take months. Where a delivery date will not wait, engineers embed into your existing team under your processes rather than working separately.

  • Engineers plug into your existing team, tools and sprint cadence
  • You keep the roadmap and set the priorities
  • Fast ramp-up, typically within 5 to 7 days
  • Specific skills added without a permanent hire
  • Capacity scales up or down as priorities shift

Six Stages, and What Gets Locked Down at Each

Reopening a settled decision is the most expensive thing that happens on a project. Each stage states what stops being negotiable once it closes.

Four Things We Will Not Do, Whatever the Pressure

Sheffield clients tend to respond better to a clear commitment than to a list of strengths. These four hold even when keeping them costs us something.

We will not subcontract your work quietly

Everything is built by Akoode staff. If we ever could not resource something internally, you would be told before it happened rather than discovering it from a name you did not recognise in a commit history.

We will not recover a bad estimate through change requests

Where a miss is ours rather than a genuine scope change, we absorb it. That distinction is written down at scoping precisely so it is not settled by whoever argues harder in month three.

We will not agree to a date we do not believe

Accepting an unrealistic deadline to win work simply moves the bad conversation later, when it is more expensive for you. If a timeline is not achievable we will say so during scoping and explain what would make it achievable.

We will not make ourselves difficult to replace

No proprietary lock-in, no infrastructure held in our accounts, no undocumented decisions. Being straightforward to leave is a deliberate design choice, and for suppliers into regulated customers it is usually a requirement as well.

Three Ways Sheffield Engagements Are Structured

Manufacturers here usually start fixed-scope for a first system, then move to a dedicated team once it is running on the shop floor and needs looking after.

What Sheffield Clients Ask Before Signing

Direct answers on budget, timelines, shop-floor constraints and what an engagement actually feels like day to day.

It has not so far, though it does change what we produce. Where you supply into nuclear, defence or aerospace customers, we agree at architecture stage what evidence the system must generate, how records stay retrievable, and how changes are documented. What we will not do is claim an accreditation we do not hold, so if your customer requires a specific certification from every supplier in the chain, raise it early and we will tell you honestly whether we qualify.
By treating your change windows as a fixed constraint rather than an inconvenience. Deployment approach, rollback path and cutover sequence get planned around production schedules during architecture, and where a system touches live operations we would expect to run the old and new in parallel until the new one has proven itself.
There is roughly six and a half hours of overlap with Sheffield hours most days, and anything needing live discussion sits inside it. Written updates land before your morning stand-up. Teams working shifts sometimes find our earlier start genuinely convenient; teams wanting someone reachable at five in the afternoon find it less so.
A dedicated team is a full cross-functional group working on your product as a unit, which suits organisations without internal engineering capacity. Augmentation adds specialists to a team you already have. If you already employ developers, augmentation is usually the better answer, and we will say so rather than sell the larger option.
You own it as written, and leaving is a supported outcome. Repositories and infrastructure are in your accounts from the first commit, so ending an engagement means revoking access rather than extracting anything from us. Documentation is written throughout on the assumption someone else will maintain the system.
Fairly regularly. Usually it is an existing product that would meet the requirement for far less, an AI brief where achievable accuracy sits below the threshold that would make it useful, or a system scoped well past what the current stage needs. Saying so during scoping costs us the work and saves you considerably more.
Usually, though the approach varies enormously. Some equipment exposes data readily, some needs an intermediate device, and occasionally the practical answer is capturing at a different point in the process entirely. We would want to look at what you actually have before promising anything, because a confident answer given without seeing the shop floor is worth very little.
It depends on scope, integration count and how much existing equipment is involved. An MVP generally falls between £25,000 and £60,000 depending on how much is genuinely needed at launch. Systems integrating with production machinery or quality management sit higher. Scoping produces a detailed breakdown and a fixed proposal before you commit.
With an audit rather than a proposal. The goal is establishing what the system actually does, including behaviour that is not documented anywhere, because in engineering firms the undocumented behaviour is frequently what a customer depends on. Sometimes the honest recommendation afterwards is a staged replacement, and occasionally it is to leave it alone and build around it.
A tightly scoped first system usually takes eight to twelve weeks. A production platform with wider integration is closer to four to six months. Systems touching regulated processes or existing machinery take longer, and you get dated milestones before development begins rather than an open-ended estimate.
Yes, before any detailed technical or commercial conversation, using your template or ours. Everything created during the engagement transfers to you in full, with no retained rights over code, designs or documentation.
Sometimes you should, particularly where someone genuinely needs to be on the shop floor regularly, or where a customer contract restricts supplier location. Our advantage is senior engineering capacity at a cost that suits a mid-market manufacturer, with enough overlap that responsiveness does not suffer. Where a local firm fits better, we would rather say so early than compete for work we are not right for.

Show Us the System Nobody Wants to Touch

A quality process running on spreadsheets, a machine producing data nobody can use, or software written by someone who left in 2014. Any of those is a reasonable place to start. You will get a straight view on whether we are the right fit, a realistic cost range, and whether your timeline stands up. A senior engineer takes the call.
