The first is aerospace, and it is the largest such cluster in the UK. Filton has been building aircraft since 1910, and Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GKN, MBDA, Leonardo and BAE Systems all operate in and around the area today. The second is silicon. The third is harder to categorise. The Bristol Robotics Laboratory, run jointly by UWE and the University of Bristol, is the largest academic robotics centre in the country. It has not so far, but it does change the paperwork. Where a client supplies into a tier-one prime, we agree at architecture stage what evidence the system must produce, how requirements trace to delivered features, and how long records stay retrievable. What we will not do is claim a certification we do not hold, so if your customer requires a specific accreditation from every supplier in the chain, tell us early and we will be straight about whether we qualify.
This is one of the more common Bristol briefs and it is rarely a simple port. Research code optimises for demonstrating an idea; product code optimises for surviving conditions the researcher never tested. We usually start with an assessment of what can be kept, what has to be rewritten, and what assumptions in the prototype will break on contact with real users, before quoting anything.

Frequently. It begins with a proper audit rather than a skim, because on some legacy systems the truthful recommendation is a rebuild, and finding that out at sprint four serves nobody. We will give you the assessment before you commit to the remediation.
Minor fixes fall inside the support window included with the build. Substantial new functionality is scoped as its own phase, usually under a retainer, so that ongoing support is not quietly consumed by feature work.
For test tooling, telemetry capture, simulation support, and design-flow automation, yes. For firmware, RTL, or anything requiring chip-level design expertise, no, and we would rather say that plainly than take the work and learn on your budget. The honest split is that we build the software around your hardware, not the hardware.
Week one is discovery sessions with your engineers and operators. Week two produces a written requirements document you review and sign. Weeks three and four are architecture and prototyping, with a fixed cost agreed before any production code exists. Most Bristol projects reach first sprint somewhere in week four or five.
Our working day starts roughly six and a half hours before yours. In practice a request raised in your afternoon is usually addressed overnight and waiting when you start, while live calls sit in your early afternoon. Teams with meeting-heavy mornings tend to find this suits them; teams that want ad-hoc conversation at 4pm find it less convenient, and that is worth weighing honestly.
Reasonably often, yes. The usual cases are a commercial tool that would cover the requirement for a fraction of the cost, an AI brief where the achievable accuracy sits below the threshold that would make it useful, and an MVP scoped far beyond what is needed to test the actual hypothesis. Saying so at discovery costs us a project; saying so at sprint six costs you considerably more.
Fixed scope for defined builds, so the discovery figure is the figure. Retainer for continuing product work where requirements genuinely evolve. Either way the commercial terms are settled before work starts rather than accumulating as we go.
Sometimes you should, particularly if you need people physically in the room with hardware, or if your procurement rules make an offshore supplier difficult. Where we tend to win is cost efficiency at senior engineering level, and the overlap hours mean you are not paying for that saving in responsiveness. If a local firm is genuinely the better fit for your situation, we will usually say so on the first call.

The most useful first conversations we have tend to start from what is going wrong rather than from a written brief, because the brief has usually already narrowed the solution. An engineer will take the call, and if the right answer turns out to be an off-the-shelf tool, a local supplier, or not building anything yet, you will hear that instead of a proposal.
